【故事梗概】

第二天早上，Richard 给出版商Carlson先生打了电话预约了一次会面。Richard和 Marilyn 都为即将去见出版商这件事而感到兴奋。

Richard: Is it too early to call Mr. Carlson?

Marilyn: Seven after nine? No. Im sure hes in his office.

Richard: His number is five, five, five, seven, five, three, two. [He dials.]. Five, five, five, seven, five, three, two. Hello. Mr. Carlson, please.

Receptionist: Mr. Carlson is busy at the moment. May I help you?

Richard: Id like to make an appointment with him.

Receptionist: And your name is...

Richard: My name is Richard Stewart. He told me to call him about my project, Family Album, U. S.A.

Receptionist: One moment, please.

Marilyn: Whats going on?

Richard: I guess theyre trying to set up an appointment for me.

Receptionist: Mr. Stewart, I just spoke to Mr. Carlson. He would like to see you. But the only time hes available this week is tomorrow morning at ten oclock.

Richard: Thanks. Thanks a lot. Good-bye. [He hangs up the phone and dances with Marilyn.] Well, its done. Tomorrow morning at a publishers office.

Marilyn: Oh, its so exciting, isnt it, Richard?

Richard: Well, finally a publisher will see my work.

project: 这里指方案，工作计划，一项工作。

请等一下。 也可以说One minute please.

4. I guess theyre trying to set up an appointment for me.

我猜想他们在设法为我安排一次约见。

try to do something: 设法做某事，试图做某事。

set up an appointment for : 为安排一次约见。

5. Mr. Stewart, I just spoke to Mr. Carlson. He would like to see you. But the only time hes available this week is tomorrow morning at ten oclock.

Stewart先生，我刚同Carlson先生说了，他很想见你。可是本周他惟一有空的时间是明天上午10点。

He would like to see you.: 在口语中，(he) would like常用缩略形式 (he)d like。这里把经常被缩略的助动词分离出来加以重读，表示强调。
